Eclectic Condo on the Lake

Renovation of Condo on the lake. This is a second home for very traditional clients whose main residence is in the south. They wanted a place to escape the hot summers and they wanted a cleaner look with a neutral palette.

Challenges

There was the usual challenge of working with out-of-state clients. The condo built in the 1960’s needed updating. Despite being a corner unit that had two walls of windows overlooking the lake, the kitchen was very dark, the bathrooms, laundry room and closets needed some updating. I was concerned that the master bath tub would be a tripping hazard.

Specifics

Clients were very easy to work with. Most everything was done through email and occasionally I sent packages of samples.

Solutions

There were cosmetic changes to the kitchen. I had the stained cabinets painted a light gray, removed the dark brown backsplash, updated the electrical with under cabinet lighting and hid the electrical outlets under the upper cabinets, and added a brighter ceiling fixture.

One bath received some cosmetic changes and in the master bath we replaced a very dated corner bath tub with a shower and replaced wall and floor tile.

The laundry room was updated with a stacking washer/dryer, wire shelving was replaced with cabinetry and a new deep sink in a cabinet was installed.

Results

The clients now have a neutral eclectic home with Asian accents in the public spaces and the master bedroom is French inspired.

Designer Note

I always interview the clients to determine their personal design style. It was helpful that the wife had sent photos of their main residence so I could see evidence of their personal taste.
