Speaking of Persian rugs, I think every home should have at least one. I recently sat down with Jahangir (Jon) Ghajar of Shayan Persian Rugs to interview him for this newsletter. I know entire books have been written about oriental rugs and it is a field unto itself, but Jon is like a walking, talking encyclopedia on this subject. I asked Jon what someone should know before purchasing a rug. He said that it does not matter about the country of origin, or how many knots per square inch, or how tight the weave is, or how much it costs. He said, “You must fall in love with it.” I expected a long discussion of the technical issues of rug making, and Jon is certainly qualified to expound on those issues, but I liked the simplicity of his answer. Buy what you love. I couldn’t agree more. – Alexander Interiors, McLean, VA
