Contrary to popular belief, the furniture need not match. It is more interesting to assemble pieces from different, but related, collections. Because the dining room is filled with wood furniture and very little fabric, it is the perfect place to add an interesting carpet with pattern. Whether it is a Persian or a Tibetan carpet, the variety of color and pattern will help break up the expanse of wood. If the carpet is covering a wood or stone floor, then just one foot of floor showing around the outer edge of the carpet is sufficient. If you have a large room, then you can have as much as two feet of the flooring exposed. If your table and chairs are barely fitting on a carpet, then your furniture looks like it is floating in the middle of the room and not anchored to anything. The proper size carpet will make the room feel larger than it is.
Pattern is a welcome addition; don’t fear it. Bring texture into the room in the form of a wallcovering, a special fabric, or murals on the walls. Window treatments not only help to protect your investment of furniture and furnishings from the damaging rays of the sun, but also help to soften and complete the look. – Alexander Interiors, McLean, VA
