I was hired to do the interior design of a 16,000 sq. ft. home. Fortunately, they had not broken ground yet. When I studied the blueprints, I asked. “Who brings the groceries into the house?” The wife said she did. I showed her that when she pulled into the garage she would be walking in a 60-foot circle to get her groceries into the kitchen. I suggested that a doorway be cut into the mudroom wall and in a few steps she would be in the kitchen. We would be eliminating one cabinet in the kitchen but saving many steps going back and forth. This single adjustment vastly improved how the custom home functioned for the entire family. The wife was very grateful that miles of unnecessary walking each year would be saved.
