If your floor is wood or tile, have the carpet extend beyond your furniture grouping allowing a 1-2 foot distance away from the wall. Stay away from all looped carpets in high traffic areas. They have a tendency to mat and show a traffic pattern quickly. If you are planning an oriental carpet, then select the carpet first and have your upholstery and drapery fabrics coordinate with it. It is very difficult trying to the other way. Use the carpet to anchor your entire color scheme.
