Decorating with Native Handcrafts – Peru

Peru

A great way to remember a special vacation is to buy something for your home. I find it irresistible not to buy handcrafted items and folk art. My recent trip to Peru yielded some lovely textiles and pottery.  The Peruvians are also known for their woodwork, gourd carvings, baskets, silverwork, and leather.  I met many artists displaying their portfolios of very traditional to modern art.  These scenes ranged from everyday events to the supernatural.

You can get the best woolens made from alpaca or vicuna in Peru.  I bought several woolen tapestries that were hand-made by the native women that I will frame for wall art.  An alpaca wool blanket in all shades of neutrals makes a beautiful throw for the back of a leather sofa in a family room or den.  Add brightly colored pillows made out of the striped blankets the native women use to carry their babies on their backs. – Alexander Interiors, McLean, VA
